~ To Our Students and Parents:
I just wanted to take a brief moment and let you know how proud I've been of you guys over the last couple of years. It's been tough serving in both capacities as Pastor and Youth Pastor, but you all have made it not only do-able but completely worth every minute we've spent together.
I want to make sure you know that I'm here to talk, grab a coke, answer questions or even hold you accountable. If Julie and I are needed in your life to help get you through something and point you to the Father in a more clear way through your circumstances, just let us know. Seriously, call us!
Several of you have really gotten on the discipleship band wagon with
follow452.com and that's awesome. If you are a parent and are looking for more help or resources with any particular issues of home and family life or don't know how to help your teen through something, we're here to help you too!
Youth Ministry is, or ought to be, a shepherding ministry to the whole family, with arms outstretched to unite, re-unite, and keep uniting the hearts of young people to their parents, while pointing them to Christ. It is a buffer and an edification tool to assist you, the parent, in bringing up your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, but it is not a babysitting tool, nor is it a popularity contest. I'm not here to replace you or do the job of parenting for you, and you wouldn't want me to! You are the world's greatest parent for your student!
I want you to know that many of the teens that spend time with us at the Oasis do not have parents that attend church. Youth Ministry is also an evangelistic tool. It is a means of becoming all things to all people so that we may win some. Sometimes the lines of reaching the world without becoming like the world, instead of more like Christ, get a little fuzzy in the differing youth ministries of today's church. It is my desire to push the envelope, raise the bar, and challenge students toward the "God-potential" that I see in them through Christ.
I pray that you will utilize the opportunities in youth ministry to assist in the strengthening of whole families, share God's love in Christ to a desperate generation looking for real and relevant truth, and enjoy with us the incredible amount of fun and fellowship we have together each week!
